Our History

The story of Tiffany begins with the vision of Mr. Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young, who established Tiffany & Young in 1837 as a “stationery and fancy goods emporium” on Broadway in Lower Manhattan. The store initially sold stationery items as well as an assortment of elegant household goods.

After a few years, Charles Tiffany took full control of the company and established the Tiffany & Co. name in 1853 when he relocated the store to Union Square. Under his leadership, Tiffany & Co. quickly earned a reputation as a premier source for luxury European tastes and styles in New York.

In the late 1850s, Tiffany expanded the store’s offerings to include select collections of fine jewelry and gems. Tiffany also began publishing catalogs that highlighted the craftsmanship of his jewelry while building the brand’s association with luxury and exclusivity.

By 1870, Tiffany & Co. had risen to become America’s premier luxury jewelry brand and a leader in developing innovative techniques used in jewelry making. Mr. Tiffany tirelessly elevated standards through his insistence on using only the finest materials and a scientific approach to gemology.

Tiffany designed the Medal of Honor in 1862 and crafted the famed 1885 redesign of the Great Seal of the United States. The brand also produced the team medals for the 1900 Olympic Games, the first Olympiad held in the United States.

The early 20th century ushered in Tiffany’s expansion into new product categories. Tiffany published the first Blue Book catalog in 1845, creating the standard by which jewelry and gemstones continue to be valued today. The iconic Tiffany® Setting ring was introduced in 1886. And in 1902, Mr. Tiffany’s son, Louis Comfort Tiffany, joined the company as its first official design director.

Throughout the 20th century, Tiffany & Co. cemented its reputation as an enduring symbol of American craftsmanship, style and sophistication. The brand played a notable role in some of the era’s most famous films, broadening its fame and recognition. Diamonds: Tiffany diamonds are among the world’s most expertly cut and polished. We only acquire stones of the highest gemological quality. Our diamond specialists then cut and polish each diamond to maximize its brilliance and fire. Tiffany was one of the first jewelers to standardize diamond grading and clearly communicate it to customers. The Tiffany Diamond Certificate accompanies each Tiffany diamond above .18 carats.

Gemstones: Our gemologists travel the world curating the finest colored gemstones based on Tiffany standards for quality that exceed normal industry criteria. We carefully hand select each ruby, sapphire, emerald, aquamarine and other gems to find those with the most vibrant color, beauty and rarity.

Metals: Tiffany designs feature precious metals including solid gold alloys designed by Tiffany, sterling silver, and platinum. We never use gold plating or gold substitutes. Tiffany silver crafspeople still hand-finish many designs using traditional techniques like hammering to enhance beauty. Gold is cast with refined techniques to retain its integrity over time.

Making by Hand: Skilled artisans meticulously transform designs into finished luxury pieces of wearable art. Instead of mechanized processes, Tiffany prioritizes expert hands devoted to every step. Silversmiths solder and polish. Gem-setters delicately place every stone. Engravers etch designs by hand. Our craftspeople ensure lasting quality worthy of the Tiffany name.
